Title: Exploration and Practice of New Engineering Education at SUSTech

 

The School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) adopts the new engineering education mode, breaks through the traditional large classroom teaching mode, uses the project-led group learning mode in the student-centered active learning environment, and creates an active learning environment through the guided teaching mode of the interconnection of projects and knowledge points, combining with the process-based comprehensive ability evaluation system. Students in the process of completing the challenge of learning guidance projects, recognize their professional interests, enhance their enthusiasm for learning, acquire comprehensive abilities such as project management, team cooperation, leadership, and experience the charm of interdisciplinary knowledge, and strive to make students improve their comprehensive quality and ability simultaneously in the process of acquiring knowledge. The school helps students customize personalized professional training programs according to their professional interests, and guides students to focus on the accumulation and integration of multidisciplinary knowledge, aiming at cultivating comprehensive leading talents with broad basic knowledge, distinctive professional characteristics, critical thinking, design thinking, system thinking, team spirit, scientific ethics and cross-cultural communication ability.

Biography

Professor Limin Zhou received his BEng and MPhil in Solids Mechanics from Harbin Engineering University in 1982 and 1988 respectively, and was awarded an Australian Research Fellowship in 1996 after receiving his PhD from The University of Sydney in 1994. He then joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPolyU) as an Assistant Professor in 1996 and became a Professor from 2005. He was the founding Head of the Interdisciplinary Division of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering From 2016 to 2018 and Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering at the HKPolyU from 2018 to 2019. At the end of 2019, he was appointed as the Chair Professor and Associate Dean of the School of System Design and Intelligent Manufacturing at Southern University of Science and Technology, and acting Dean of the School from 2021 to 2022. He is currently an Editor-in-Chief for Composite Communications and a Vice President of Chinese Society for Composite Materials.
